Jaw pain can affect your ability to eat and talk, even to laugh. Therefore, it is important to know what your jaw pain means in order to find a way to relieve it.
 
The most common cause of jaw pain
 
Most jaw pain is caused by an abnormality or injury to your jaw joint, especially in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is a set of joints and jaw muscles that work to open and close your mouth when you chew, talk, or swallow.  This joint also controls the lower jaw when moving forward, backward and sideways.
 
The pain caused by TMJ joint intervention usually begins with habits such as tooth breakdown, sleep or stress, during arthritis, trauma to the jaw, head, or neck.  A wound in the jaw joint and repeated use can also cause pain. Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
  • Jaw pain
  • Pain in and around the ear
  • Difficulty or trouble chewing
  • Facial pain
  • The lock of the joint causes the mouth to open and close.

If TMJ disorder is not the cause of your pain, some of the conditions below can also cause pain in the jaw and the surrounding area.

The pain caused by cluster headaches is usually constant, strong, not the vibrations that feel deep inside the head or around the eyes on one side of the head. The pain often travels to the forehead, temples and cheeks and spreads to the jaw.
 
Sinusitis
 
Sinusitis is inflammation or swelling of sinus tissue near the jaw joint. The normal sinus is coated with a thin layer of mucus that can catch dust, germs, or other particles from the air.  When the sinuses become blocked, germs can grow and cause infection. Sinus inflammation can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi.  The infected sinus puts pressure on the jaw joint and causes pain in the area.

Trigeminal neuralgia or facial pain is a condition of abnormality in the trigeminal nerve near the temples that can cause pain in the jaw.  However, this condition is rare.
